Graduate students in the Department of Chemistry at UGA receive Assistantships, as long as they adhere to the expectations listed in the Chemistry Graduate Student Handbook. Assistantships fall broadly into the categories of Teaching/Laboratory Assistantship (GTA/GLA; Graduate Teaching or Laboratory Assistant) or Research Assistantship (GRA; Graduate Research Assistantship). These assistantships are requested by the Major Advisors every semester. Current students should direct questions about Assistantships first to their Major Advisor. Financial Aid is administered by the Office of Student Financial Aid and is independent of the Chemistry Department Assistantships. All questions about Financial Aid should be directed to the Office of Student Financial Aid. Both GRAs and GTA/GLAs are paid positions meant to support students as they complete their dissertation research. It is expected that GTAs/GLAs complete their teaching responsibilities and use the remaining time on their research project. Stipend information is outlined in the offer letters that students receive every year. Students receiving assistantships are required to enroll in at least 12 credit hours in the Fall and Spring and 9 credit hours in the Summer. Most students should enroll in 17 credit hours every semester (see Program of Study and Coursework section of the Chemistry Graduate Student Handbook). All students with Assistantships receive a tuition waiver that reduces the tuition to a very small amount. This does not include fees.
