The UGA Department of Chemistry is affiliated with several core facilities that provide research support and services in the areas of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), proteomics and mass spectrometry (PAMS), electron microscopy (GEM), and X-ray diffraction. Additional core facilities across the UGA campus are also used to support the diverse range of chemistry research performed. NMR facilityDr. Earle Adams, manager The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facility specializes in the use of magnetic resonance spectroscopy in elucidating and understanding small molecule structure. The facility houses two NMRs and one EPR and is located in the new STEM-I building on the east side of campus. The facility is equipped with instruments for high resolution and high mass accuracy analysis and specializes in protein identification and compound characterization using mass spectrometry. Facility website: https://pams.uga.edu/ Georgia Electron Microscopy (GEM) facility Dr. Eric Formo and Prof. Tina Salguero, directors GEM is home to electron microscopy instrumentation and equipment for multi-disciplinary research. A highly knowledgeable technical staff with diverse backgrounds work with a wide variety of clients to maximize results. GEM provides a broad range of assistance for research, training, and service functions. The Core service provides workshops, outreach and assists with courses for the University System of Georgia. Facility website: https://gem.uga.edu/ X-Ray Crystallography Laboratory The single-crystal X-ray diffractometer, a Bruker D8 Quest PHOTON 100 CMOS X-ray diffractometer system is located in Room 1027 of STEM-1 Building. This instrument is used to collect X-ray reflection intensity data from samples in a form of single crystal to determine molecular structures for chemical materials such as inorganic, organic and organometallic compounds. Primary crystallographic software is the APEX suite in which SHELXTL programs are fully integrated for structure solution and refinement. Facility website: https://xraychem.uga.edu/ Complex Carbohydrate Research Center (CCRC) The CCRC is organized to foster cooperation and collaboration among disciplines (biomedical, plant and microbial glycosciences, chemical synthesis and analytical chemistry) both within the CCRC and with scientists world-wide and to provide analytical services and training. The CCRC occupies a 140,000 sq. ft. building designed specifically for the interdisciplinary and equipment-intensive nature of modern-day glycosciences: 321,200 sq. ft. research laboratories with state-of-the art equipment, specialized labs for synthetic chemistry and for plant and animal cell culture, an NMR spectroscopy center, a computer center, a glycomics facility, an analytical services laboratory and a 1,600 sq. ft. teaching laboratory, a 4,000-sq. ft. greenhouse, and a 260-seat auditorium. Kandasamy, director The University of Georgia Biomedical Microscopy Core (BMC) provides access to confocal, deconvolution, light sheet, super resolution and other optical microscope systems that are useful for multi-color imaging of live and fixed cells and tissue samples, and high-content screening. This state-of-the-art microscopy facility serves UGA and external researchers by providing microscopy related expertise, training and assistance for advancing their projects on various model organisms. The center provides to the UGA research and education community an advanced computing environment comprised of a high-performance computing and networking infrastructure located at the Boyd Data Center, a comprehensive collection of scientific, engineering and business applications, as well as consulting and training services. Barber, managers Experienced staff and a full complement of machine tools, welding and sheet metal fabrication equipment assures the Instrument Design & Fabrication Shop can design, fabricate, repair or modify new or existing equipment and machinery in the most cost-effective manner, while meeting all work specifications. In addition, CNC milling and turning used with computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) enable the shop to make one item or many.
