UGA Chemistry Diagnostic Test (UGA-CDT)

The UGA Chemistry Diagnostic Test is required of all students who expect to register for either…

CHEM 1210 Basics of Chemistry OR

CHEM 1211 Freshman Chemistry I

The outcome of the test is advisory in nature.  The CDT results guide students to take either CHEM 1210 or CHEM 1211.  A student does not receive UGA course credit based on this test.  CHEM 1211, the first semester of a two semester sequence, assumes rigorous high school chemistry preparation: 2 or more semesters OR two semesters of an Honors course OR two semesters of a course at the level of AP.

Students who attend orientation (typically in the summer for new entering students) will receive information and advice about the appropriate course required for their intended major or program.  The student will need to pre-register for either CHEM 1210 or CHEM 1211.  Subsequent to being pre-registered, each student will be assigned to an eLC course (CHEM 1210/1211 Diagnostic Exam).  This course will appear in each student’s “My Home” page within eLC: log into https://uga.view.usg.edu/ and click “My Home”)

The CDT has 30 questions and allows 60 minutes to complete.  Only a simple calculator and the student’s knowledge is required to complete it.  (Any additional information is provided within the test.)  Many of the questions are multiple choice.  Students should work alone and without access to books or electronic resources.  Inappropriately inflated scores are not useful information for a student.

The CDT is a simple test that seeks to provide useful information to students.  The other information that you should use to guide your decision:

  • advice from a UGA advisor
  • additional knowledge about HS courses (e.g., too easy for you; taken in 9th grade)
  • additional information about analytical reasoning skills (e.g., a math placement score)
  • willingness to invest considerable effort and motivation

UGA allows students to earn course credit for CHEM 1110/1110L, CHEM 1211/1211L and CHEM 1212/1212L based on the College Board’s AP exams

UGA does not currently offer a UGA Placement Exam with which students could earn credit equivalencies.  The historical Chemistry Placement Exam no longer exists (i.e., has not been used for MANY years).  Program and major advisors may be referring to the Chemistry Diagnostic Test (new in 2014 at UGA) by the wrong name.
