Associate Professor

Work in the Frossard Lab at UGA is focused on understanding the composition and properties of surfactants in atmospheric aerosol particles and how these surfactants influence the hygroscopic properties of aerosol particles.

Amanda joined the faculty at UGA as an assistant professor in Chemistry in Fall 2017. She received a BS in Chemistry from UC Berkeley in 2008, where she worked as an undergraduate researcher with Allen Goldstein. Amanda completed her PhD in 2014 at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, at UC San Diego. There she worked with Lynn Russell studying the organic composition of marine aerosol particles. Amanda worked with Ronald Cohen at UC Berkeley as a postdoctoral scholar in Chemistry, where she built an aerosol optical trap to measure particle hygroscopic growth.

Education:
  • PhD, University of California, San Diego, 2014
  • MS, University of California, San Diego, 2012
  • BS, University of California, Berkeley, 2008
Research Interests:

The goal of our work is to understand how the chemical composition of aerosol particles influences their properties in the atmosphere and their effects on clouds and air quality. Our work focuses on characterizing the chemical composition and properties of surface-active organics (surfactants) in atmospheric aerosol particles. We look at the effect of natural and laboratory surfactants in seawater on marine aerosol particle production, the composition and concentration of surfactants in atmospheric marine aerosol particles, and the influence of surfactants on cloud droplet properties. We work both in the laboratory building instruments and analyzing samples and in the field measuring and collecting ambient aerosol. Website: frossardlab.com
