The Department of Chemistry offers several tracks for students depending on their background and aspirations: CHEM 1110 - Elementary Chemistry. This course is intended for non-STEM majors. It counts toward the Area II requirement for "physical science with lab." Chem 1110L is a mandatory co-requisite lab course. CHEM 1210 - Basics of Chemistry. This course is a preparatory course intended for students who experienced challenges with high school chemistry (or did not take it at all). The fundamentals of chemistry are a focus of the course, but significant time is spent developing learning and study habits. The course focuses on understanding concepts rather than memorizing facts. It counts toward the Area II requirement for “physical science without lab.” There is no lab with CHEM 1210. CHEM 1211 and 1212 – General Chemistry. This is the main general chemistry sequence. It is required for most STEM majors and pre-health students. The course is taught in a ‘flipped’ style, meaning that students must read the textbook before class and come in with a basic understanding of the material. In class, the instructors work with students to build a better understanding of the concepts through interactive questions, activities, and case studies. Students are expected to focus on the concepts and not on memorizing content and solutions. Chem 1211L / 1212L are mandatory co-requisite lab courses. CHEM 1311H and 1312H - Advanced General Chemistry, Honors. This is the advanced general chemistry course for Honors students (see Advanced Chemistry for Majors, below, which also offers Honors credit). Permission of the Honors College is required for registration. Chem 1311L and CHEM 1312L are mandatory co-requisite lab courses. CHEM 1411H and 1412H - Advanced General Chemistry, Majors. This is the advanced general chemistry course for chemistry and engineering Majors, which also offers Honors credit. Permission of the Chemistry Department is required for registration. Chem 1411L and CHEM 1412L are mandatory co-requisite lab courses. Chemistry 1210/1211 Placement Test The Chemistry department has developed a placement test for incoming first-year students to help them register for the appropriate chemistry class. The test is strongly recommended for any student who did not test out of MATH 1113 and/or did not take a chemistry class in their senior year of high school. Students register at https://mlm.pearson.com/northamerica/myreadinesstest/students/get-registered/index.html by clicking the button “Register for a course required by your instructor” and use the Program ID XL44-M132-601Z-1ET2. The cost for the test is $14.99 and includes math and chemistry remediation for students who do not place into Chemistry 1211 but earn close to the minimum placement score: Score ranges: >82%: Chemistry 1211 recommended. 50 – 81.9%: Remediation available, followed by a second placement attempt. <50%: Chemistry 1210 recommended. Students who do not score greater than or equal to 82% after remediation are recommended to take Chemistry 1210. CHEM 1210 "I took chemistry in high school but I struggled with it." CHEM 1210 "I took chemistry in high school, did well, and I'm comfortable with introductory concepts of chemistry." CHEM 1211 / 1212 "I took chemistry in high school, did very well, and I want to be an honors student in science or engineering." CHEM 1311H / 1312H "I took chemistry in high school, did very well, and I want to major in chemistry or engineering and receive Honors credit." If any of this information is missing, the email will be returned without action, resulting in a delay. All credit transfer and overrides require that you attach a copy of your transcript. If you do not have an official transcript yet, you may send a screen shot of the unofficial grade report or online transcript. The screen shot must show the following information: Name of the institution. Name of the student Year and semester The course number (e.g. “CHEM 3456”) and title (e.g. “Inorganic Chemistry”). Grade If the transcript is not attached, the email will be returned without action, resulting in a delay.
